The Cardiff University Harry Potter Society celebrates its fifth year running as the new semester starts in 2009. Brought together by a mutual love of the books and a healthy cynicism regarding the films, two dental students, Julia Pepper and Sam Kenealy, sought to unite Potter geeks from all over the campus. Our first meeting was so popular we had to switch pubs! Whoever said bookworms aren’t sociable?! Pah!

Every year things have been a bit different, with the coming and going of various beloved and memorable executives on the committee, but one thing that holds strong is the incredible ability of the society to create long-lasting friendships. Our schedule of events always provides variety, with a vast range of socials, catering for everyone from the hardcore shippers, who wish only to convert you to their match-making ways, to those who like drinking as much as Hagrid does and everybody in between. Discussions, quizzes, pub crawls, balls, games, fan fiction and fan art, film screenings, outings… we have it all and more!

High profile events include our trip to London for the Goblet of Fire premiere, three highly successful Yule Balls, our presence at a local midnight launch for Deathly Hallows and fun and games at Borders to celebrate the release of Tales of Beedle the Bard. Even grander plans are afoot for 2009/2010 – you’d have to be a Muggle to miss out!
