The Magical World of Harry Potter

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

This year, the society is embarking on yet more new territory and taking part in the Student Union’s annual Go Global festival at the end of February.

By involving thousands of students, GO GLOBAL seeks to present the identity and strength of culture of our student body to the University and the local, Cardiff community.

By putting on interesting and unique events, Societies and International Students in close partnership with the Students’ Union, aim to offer scope to students, staff and the local community.

We plan to spend an evening re-telling the story of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in as many languages as possible. And maybe with a few fun (and possible house point-generating) activities thrown in.

Our social on Tuesday 9th February will be in preparation for this. We’ll be discussing how we’re going to put this together, so come armed with ideas and, if you have them, foreign language versions of the books. Which parts of the text are essential to tell the story? Which bits are your favourites?

What else can we do to make the evening entertaining? Suggestions so far have included a Mastermind-style quiz or attempting some sort of indoor Quidditch (probably a bit of a stretch…). All ideas welcome!

Second Triwizard Task

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Hey guys! In other news of ‘things I should have sent out earlier this week’, in a couple of weeks we’re going to have our second Triwizard task. Only for us, it’s going to be a night at an adult ball pool (adult in that it’s for grown-ups, not any other reason) in Swansea. The website is here.

Friday 19th February. Plan is to meet at the station at 5/5.30, and travel back on the 10.30pm train to Cardiff, so we’d get about three hours in the ball pit. Cost wise, it’s £8.50 (or £7.50 with student ID), plus travel expenses (which will be £6 train with a rail card and £10 without, and then a couple of quid for taxis to get to the Playzone in Swansea).

But we need to book the Playzone, so we’d like to have numbers ASAP. Please email us if you want to come!

House Points Update

Monday, February 1st, 2010

After the quiz last week, we need to update the house points! Tim’s epic quiz was highly-contested with just one point between first place and joint second. Congratulations to Ravenclaw on what I believe is their first victory of the year!

The points before:

Slytherin: 516.5
Gryffindor: 502.5
Ravenclaw: 480.5
Hufflepuff: 432.5

And now the updated points:

Slytherin: 550.5
Gryffindor: 536.5
Ravenclaw: 515.5
Hufflepuff: 466.5

So no change to the overall positions. But how will that change this semester…?

Hoodies

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

We’re ordering hoodies via the SU this year, as well as any other HP Soc gear that people want. Order forms were handed out last semester, but we all know how easy it is to lose random piece of paper. So here’s a handy-dandy .pdf copy of the form for you to download and print out.

Return completed forms (with the money) to Tim.

Thank you to everyone who came to the quiz last night. And especially thanks to Tim for putting together such an entertaining quiz.

It was close, literally one point between first place and joint second. Congratulations to Ravenclaw on their very narrow victory!

Keep an eye on your email for information about next week’s social – the committee are currently working out the details.

Secret Elf Exchange

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Hey guys,

First off we have the last official meeting of this term tomorrow, the ever popular Secret Elf Exchange. As most of you know by now, the gist is that if you buy a gift (budget is £3), wrap it and bring it along, then you get one back in return.

For those of you staying over the Christmas holidays then you can pretty much guarantee that there will be someone in Central Bar on a Tuesday night stuffing themselves silly with chocolate fudge cake, or some other form of dessert.

On a different matter entirely, if I remember correctly, Sam’s sister is writing an essay on Wizard Rock for her degree and would like some information. If anyone has an interest in or knows anything about Wizard Rock it would be greatly appreciated if you could notify Sam (aka The Whomping Willow).

Lastly, I will not be attending the Secret Elf Exchange tomorrow unfortunately. You can blame the evil lectures who,  so it seems, were put on this earth to make our lives a living hell. So I would just like to wish you all a fantabulous  Christmas and magical New Year!

Hoping to see you in the New Year,

Danielle
Harry Potter Society President

Schedule Update

Friday, November 20th, 2009

There’s been a slight change to the schedule for the last few weeks of the semester, so check out the amended version here.

One week until the Yule Ball!

Yule Ball Countdown!

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

So you’ll all be pleased to hear that the ball has been paid off and we are now on our official 2 week count down until the event itself! I hope you’ve all written down the date in your diary but just as a reminder, here are the details:

Date: Friday 27th November.
Start time: 7pm. Bucks Fizz reception in the bar.
8pm. Dinner served. Followed by disco and all manner of good times.
Finishing time: 1am.

For the next order of business, I just need to double check that there are no relevant allergies among you? Or any vegetarians? Please let me know asap.

Finally I think, and most importantly, menu choices. Here is a list of the food options:

Main Course
Option 1: Roast Glamorgan turkey with post sausage bacon roll, sage and onion stuffing and rich gravy.
Option 2: Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding with port gravy.
Option 3: Leek and gruyere crown (V): a puff pastry parcel filled with sautéed leeks and creamy melted gruyere cheese.

Help yourself to chefs selection of seasonal vegetables and roast potatoes.

Dessert
Option 1: Traditional Christmas pudding served with brandy sauce.
Option 2: Profiteroles with chocolate sauce.

I need you to tell me before the 20th of November, which option you would prefer. If I do not hear back from you, then I will assume you want the first option of each and mark them down. If you want them anyway, PLEASE STILL REPLY TO THE EMAIL. You have no idea how frustrating it is to e-mail and not get any reply. Another things is, I have been given a wine list which is available for pre-ordering with 10% off. The bottles of wine range from £14.95 and £18.95 and if you would like more information on them, please let me know and I’ll send you a copy of the list. Again though, I’ll need this information before the 20th of November. If you are one of the people who has bought a ticket for a guest, please inform me about their dietary needs too.

For now, I think that is everything. Thanks very much and hope everyone is fabulous. :D

Yule Ball Tickets

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Harry, Danielle, Myranda, Emily and KatTo All Fellow Potterites!

Next week will be your last chance to get a Yule Ball ticket! PLEASE, PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE COME. WITH CHERRY ON TOP?

Just in case some of you need a reminder, it’s on the 27th of November starting at 7pm and ending at 1am. There will be a carvery dinner with a choice of turkey or beef (or the veggie option, obviously) with a
selection of vegetables. There will be music, party favours and (hopefully) a chocolate fountain. Basically it’s gonna be a completely fantabulous evening!

If you’re suddenly thinking: “Damn, I meant to get my ticket already and I have a sudden urge to give Alex £30 immediately!” then contact me on Facebook or my mobile number (details are in the latest email that were sent out). If you wanna come but have the patience to wait then come along Tuesday at 33 Windsor Place and you shall have my eternal devotion. If, on the other hand, you just want a proper belly laugh then come along and see me start to beg people for money.

So please come along Tuesday and buy a ticket, you really won’t regret it!

Love, Alex.
