So, it’s time for our first task in the Triwizard Tournament. This year, the task will be taking place on Sunday 7th November in Bute Park (the one behind the castle). We’re going to be meeting outside the front of the Union, at 11.00 am, after which we will all head down to the park and begin the hunt for the dragons! There will be four dragons, one for each house. Each house needs to find their specific dragon, and solve the riddle hidden within the golden egg. Once they have solved the riddle, they will return to the designated meeting point (which we will tell you on the day). The first house to the meeting point wins!
Now, there are going to be some rules for this. Firstly, this is essentially a game of hide and seek. We don’t want anyone getting hurt because they were being chased or chasing a dragon. If anyone hurts one of the dragons due to excessive force being used, points will be removed from their house. We have also worked very hard on the eggs for this game, and would appreciate it if you could not damage them, as some people wish to keep them.
Secondly, the dragon assigned to each house will not be from that house. This is an attempt to eliminate any cheating from the dragons on behalf of their house. If we find out that any dragon has refused to hand over their egg to the rightful house, points will be removed from said dragon.
Hope to see you there,
HP Soc
A nice, chilled relaxing social. Writing random stories or drawing equally random art, that sort of thing. Pen and paper are useful! As we draw closer to the première of Deathly Hallows, there’s plenty of room for discussion of the film and just letting your excitement out a bit! Facebook event is here.
Doing NaNoWriMo this year? Come along if you can bear to drag yourself away from your word count! Or bring it with you – there may very be other people to sympathise with you and share tips and tricks.
Don’t forget, we’re also taking money for the Yule Ball. Everyone is welcome, whether they’re a member of the society or not. Details are here.
Around 9.30, or maybe before, we’ll probably head next door to Central Bar. Some members of the committee need their chocolate fudge cake or they get cranky. Or something like that.
The cinema event is up with all the details but here they are again in case you mised it….
Unfortunately there is no midnight showing anywhere in Cardiff, sucks I know. Anyways I have decided to organse the trip for the Friday the 19th of November when the movie is released. As it’s a Friday and most of us have lectures or jobs juring the day it’s gonna be late at night, this will also hopefully avoid mega business and annoying children. The film showing I have booked is 22.30 at Vue Cinema. This is because it is off the beaten track so hopefully less busy again and coz its cheaper! Student tickets are £5.65 and teen is £5.35 (that’s anyone still 18). All you oldies I’m afraid adult is £6.70.
As it prob will still be relatively busy I still think it is a good idea to get there early. If you can make your way there on your own, (the cinema is next to Central Station btw) then I would suggest get there for about 10. For those of you that do not know then I will be meeting people outside the front of the Union at 9.15. This is because its about 30 min or so walk. So get buying your tickets for 22.30 on the 19th Nov at Vue Cinema Cardiff. Website is www.myvue.co.uk and select Cardiff as your cinema.
Final note we have applied to the Union for funds so if we get any we can reinburse some or all of the ticket cost so get going and book your ticket coz I can have no responsibility if the showing is full!!! x
Our Harry Potter Halloween party!
The theme is ‘come as a dead character’ – interpret that any way you want, from Hedwig to George Weasley’s poor departed ear. Death Eaters are also welcome, so are Dementors. In fact, anything Harry Potter-related.
Don’t forget! You can also pay for your Yule Ball ticket. Details about it are here.
After last night’s Pub Quidditch, the houses wracked up some serious house points. Are any of the Slytherins part fish, by any chance?
1st: Slytherin, 680
2nd: Hufflepuff, 553
3rd: Gryffindor, 340
4th: Ravenclaw, 282
So where does this leave the house points totals? Well, as you can see, it’s all change.
Gryffindor: 469
Hufflepuff: 674
Ravenclaw: 438
Slytherin: 828

To celebrate the release of Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole at the ODEON this weekend, The Red Dragon Centre has teamed up with Falconry-uk to host a spectacular selection of birds of prey this Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th October from 12 – 4pm.
Full details can be found here.
Other societies have pub golf, we have pub Quidditch! A similar sort of concept, just a little bit more Potter-fied.
We’ll be starting this pub crawl at Central Bar (upstairs) and then be moving on from there. Don’t worry if you don’t drink – unlike pub golf – winning points doesn’t rely on drinking alcohol. If you want to wear your house colours or show a bit of house pride, you’re more than welcome.
Whether you drink or not PLEASE bring proof of age ID. Better to be safe than sorry.
Don’t forget! You can also pay for your Yule Ball ticket. Details about it are here. [Facebook event]
After the first quiz of the year last night, it’s time to update our (completely imaginary) hour glasses with some house points.
The quiz was closely-fought, but in the end there could only be one winner:
1st: Ravenclaw, 156
2nd: Slytherin, 148
3rd: Gryffindor, 129
4th: Hufflepuff, 121
The competition for the house cup is officially ON!
Here’s some photos from our first quiz night (and the mini-Sorting Ceremony).
Congratulations to Ravenclaw on their victory.
Hey all!
Alex here, your friendly neighbourhood Ball Secretary.
As I mentioned in our first meeting, every year we have a Yule Ball which involves Christmas dinner and dancing! Every year they tend to be one of our most successful events as everyone loves an excuse to put on a posh frock (you too, boys) and boogie the night away.
This year it’s taking place at the Park Inn in Cardiff’s City Centre on Sunday December 5th and the tickets will cost £25. This will get you a glass of bubbly on arrival, 3 course meal (menu below), disco and, new this year, karaoke! Tickets are available now and with be until November 7th which is our first Triwizard Task. Friends are obviously welcome and if you feel you wanna come, but think you may not be able to get the money before the 7th, please come have a chat with me (I’m in Slytherin, blonde and loud).
Anyway, I think that’s all for now.
Love, Alex.
